Resumen
Background. Peru is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of dust mites in Latinoamerica, mainly in the city of Lima. Few studies have determined sensitization profiles to allergens in cer tain Peruvian non-pediatric locations. Objective. To describe the profiles of atopic sensitization to aeroallergens in a population of students of a university in Lima. Methods. Descriptive study of cross section. The study population was made up of the students of the Norber t Wiener University with or without asthma or allergic rhinitis previously diagnosed. We evaluated sociodemographic variables, family and personal background, sensitization to allergens and the types of aeroallergens to which they were sensitized. It was used absolute and relative frequencies for the description of categorical variables, and measures of central tendency and dispersion for the numerical variables. Results. Of 249 university students (median age: 27.6 years), 79.10% of males were sensitized to aeroallergens, 85.51% of the sensitized population were polysensitized and the most prevalent allergen was B. tropicalis (74.19%). Conclusion: It was found that a higher prevalence of sensitization in the male sex and in those students who had antecedents of having a mother or father with some allergic disease. In the sensitized population the most frequent allergen found was B. tropicalis and there was a great prevalence of polysensitization to house dust and storage mites. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
