Introduction: Antibiotic resistance is one of the world's major health problems. Objective: To assess the prescribing and dispensing characteristics of back-up antimicrobials at Clinic from Peru. Methods: The study was descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional and data collection was done retrospectively. The population consisted of 1,396 prescriptions that include reserve antimicrobials from the Clinic under study. The sampling was probabilistic, simple random, considering a minimum precision of 5% with a proportion of losses of 9%, with which 440 prescribed medical prescriptions were observed, the study being applicable to any health establishment where there are doctors. For the collection of data, the observation technique was used, having as an instrument the data collection sheet that includes 18 observable indicators. Subsequently, for data processing, percentages of interest were estimated using point and interval estimates at 95% confidence. The data analysis was carried out with the use of the programs: Microsoft Excel 2016 and IBM SPSS Statistics version 24.0, whose results were organized in tables and statistical graphs. Results: With regard to patient data, compliance was 94.1%. Regarding the prescriber's data, only 85.9% of the prescriptions contained complete information. The prescriptions that presented the correct and complete filling of the antimicrobial data were 79.1. The correct dispensing of antimicrobials was 69.3%. Conclusions: It was determined that the clinic under study has high percentages of compliance with the characteristics of prescription and dispensing of reserve antimicrobials, leaving a minimum percentage that could improve. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
