Defeat, Entrapment, and Alcohol Consumption as Predictors of Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents; Derrota, atrapamiento y consumo de alcohol como predictores de la ideación suicida en adolescentes

Abstract

Introduction: Suicidal ideation is a multifactorial mental health issue that negatively impacts adolescent development. Few studies address social aspects and experiences encountered in educational contexts. It is necessary to identify social and clinical risk factors that influence the emergence of suicidal ideation. Objective: Analyze defeat, entrapment, and alcohol consumption as predictors of suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods: Predictive associative and quantitative strategy. A total of 3098 adolescents (52,1 % female) from Huancavelica participated, recruited from fourteen educational institutions through convenience sampling. A sociodemographic survey and psychological instruments were applied. Statistical analyses were conducted using structural equation modeling of latent and observable variables. Results: The hypothetical model showed acceptable fit: CFI = 0,91, RMSEA = 0,047 [90 % CI: 0,045, 0,048], SRMR = 0,046. Specifically, entrapment (β = 0,43, p = 0,001), defeat (β = 0,12, p = 0,001), and alcohol consumption (β = 0,12, p = 0,001) were found to positively and significantly predict suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Social aspects such as experiences of defeat and entrapment, along with alcohol consumption, are relevant predictors of suicidal ideation in adolescents. Educational and clinical psychologists should integrate these aspects into their assessments to reduce the prevalence of suicidal ideation, accompanied by a comprehensive prevention strategy in the school context. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
