Aim: This study aimed to determinate the prevalence of falls in the elderly and its relationship with the functional capacity. Method: This is an epidemiological and cross-sectional study; a two-stage cluster sample of 240 male and female subjects aged over 60 years was used. Data were collected from November 2010 to February 2011. The following questionnaires were used: socio-demographic profile, assessment of falls, Functional Independence Measure, Lawton and Brody Scale. Significance was set at 0.05. To identify the occurrence of falls and their relation with functional capacity, the prevalence ratio and prevalence odds ratios were used, as well as multiple logistic regression. Results: Average age was 73.5 years (±8.4); 25% 80 years or more, with preponderance of female gender; 48.8% attended school between 1-4 years. The average was 1.33 falls (±0.472), with prevalence in women and elderly between 60 and 79 years old; the most frequently sites were the backyard and bathroom. Strong correlation between the level of functional independence and instrumental activities and age was found, but no relation between elderly victims of falls and the gender and age variables. Conclusion: Women who suffered falls related to functional independence were predominant, which can be prevented through elderly health promotion strategies, a policy that serves to offer living conditions to people in the aging process. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.; MEDLINE® is the source for the MeSH terms of this document.

In this study was evaluated the financial results after the implantation of an information system for selling shipping of packages, developed in-house in an inter-carrier charge in Lima through the variation of procedure 059 of MAIGTI methodology, which suggests the evaluation of the net present value considering additional incomes (contribution margin and savings) and additional expenses (additional investments and additional expenditures) with a discount rate in a evaluation period similar to long term planning period according to the type of entity in which the evaluation was realized. The implantation of the information system of packages shipping obtained S/. 138,070 new soles (approximately US$ 48,446) as net present value after the first year, and S/. 1,178,996 new soles (approximately US$ 413,683) as net present value after the third year, due the increment of loyalty of clients through the reduction of time to 70% in the emission of bills and for avoiding losses due a proportion of clients didn't hire the service because the emission of bills was manual. Also, the study demonstrates that the variation of procedure 059 of the MAIGTI methodology is valid for the evaluation of financial return of an information system in a transport firm. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

This paper describes the experiences in offering data mining (DM) workshops at University of Norbert Wiener (UNW) in Lima, Peru. This educational initiative is a result of a longstanding collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering and Business at UNW and Thompson Rivers University in Canada. The workshops were offered in May 2014 and May 2015, and had three learning objectives: (1) to acquire practical skills (hands-on experience) in DM, (2) to solve problems using computer systems in bioinformatics and engineering, and (3) to learn fundamental DM concepts and techniques simultaneously in two languages: en and Spanish. The bilingual aspect of the DM workshops was very important, because the students had not only the opportunity to learn advanced computer skills, but also to learn complex terminology in two languages. Bilingualism (Spanish, en) is an important growth factor for the Peruvian economy, and students' bilingual fluency in technical terminology is mandatory for their participation in the development and use of advanced technologies, such as, applications of DM in biomedicine and engineering. In this paper, we present how we have met these three educational objectives using methods based on experiential learning, problem-based learning, and bilingual education. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Background. Violence against the elderly is a social problem that occurs within the family and is not reported because of fear. This hinders the work of health multi-professional staff for the detection, reporting and prevention of such cases. Objective. To identify the prevalence, types of domestic violence, its association with socio-demographic variables and depressive symptoms in the elderly living in the community studied. Materials and methods. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with 369 elderly in the district of Breña, Lima (Peru). The Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination and the Geriatric Depression Scale were used as socio-demographic instruments. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and logistic regression were applied. Results. Female sex, younger elderly, married marital status and family formation by the married were predominant. The prevalence of domestic violence was 79.7% and 48.2% for depressive symptoms. Financial violence was prevalent. During the regression, it was verified that whoever that does not work has a greater chance of suffering violence. The more the years of schooling, the lower the risk of violence. Also, the ones who have depressive symptoms don’t suffer violence. Conclusions. It was observed that the elderly need lifelong care. The health staff must recognize signs and symptoms in the elderly suffering violence and presenting depressive symptoms; the health staff must provide information on the importance of reporting cases to promote a healthy and qualitative aging. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Objectives. To determine the characteristics of the criminal complaints claining medical professional liability, based on the expert reports issued by the Forensic Examination Division of Lima, Peru. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out, which included all the expert reports issued between 2005 and 2010 at the Forensic Examination Division of Lima, Peru. A descriptive analysis of each of the variables was performed. Results. 60.3% (495/821) of the criminal complaints for medical professional liability were valued as being in accordance with the lex artis while16.8% (138/821) were not in accordance with the lex artis. In 13% (107/821) of the cases, conclusions could not be drawn;in 9.9% (81/821) of the cases, the conclusions in the expert report did not include an valuations of the medical act.The cases in which the injury was attributed to the process of the disease itself accounted for 80.9% (502/620), and those in which in the injury was considered a result of the health care received were 19.0% (118/620). The distribution of the cause of the injury based on accordance with the lex artis showed significant differences. Conclusions. In our country, the number of claims for claimed medical liability is increasing, predominantly in relation to surgical specialties, where a medical act is more likely to be considered not in accordance with the lex artis. In addition, in a significant percentage of cases, no conclusions are drawn about the medical act. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
